Home / Conditions / Reticular Veins
Reticular veins are enlarged, bluish or purple veins that lie beneath the surface of the skin. They are larger than spider veins but smaller than varicose veins and are often visible as branching or net-like patterns.
Reticular veins commonly occur on the thighs, behind the knees, and around the ankles.
Reticular veins develop when vein valves fail to function properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool within the vein. This increased pressure causes the veins to enlarge and become visible beneath the skin.
Reticular veins often act as “feeder veins” for spider veins. Treating reticular veins may be necessary to achieve effective and long-lasting results when managing spider veins.
Reticular veins are not always harmful, but they may indicate underlying venous insufficiency. An evaluation can help determine whether treatment is recommended and whether deeper veins are involved.
If reticular veins are accompanied by discomfort, swelling, or the development of spider or varicose veins, consultation with a vascular specialist is advised.
An evaluation can determine whether reticular veins are contributing to symptoms or underlying venous disease.
