Home / Conditions / Spider Veins
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They are commonly red, blue, or purple and may form web-like or branching patterns.
Spider veins most often appear on the legs but can also occur on the face and other areas of the body.
While spider veins are often considered cosmetic, they can sometimes be associated with underlying venous insufficiency. An evaluation can help determine whether further investigation or treatment is recommended.
Treatment depends on the extent of the veins and whether deeper venous disease is present.
If spider veins are accompanied by discomfort, swelling, or skin changes, or if they continue to progress, a consultation with a vascular specialist is recommended.
A consultation can help determine whether spider veins are cosmetic or related to underlying venous disease.
