Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly appear on the legs and ankles. They often protrude above the skin’s surface and may appear blue or purple in color.
Varicose veins develop due to venous reflux, a condition in which vein valves fail to function properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the legs.
Varicose veins may worsen over time if left untreated. As venous pressure increases, surrounding tissues can be affected, leading to skin changes, discoloration, inflammation, and in advanced cases, venous ulcers.
